In an interview with us «Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters»-director Tommy Wirkola says actor Willem Dafoe has agreed to take on a major role in Wirkolas next movie «What happened to Monday?»

Wirkola and the crew started shooting the new movie in Romania last week. It's allready known that Noomi Rapace and Glenn Close are starring in the film.

– Yes, it's true. We've signed someone who has been in the game for a long time: Willem Dafoe, Wirkola says.

The caracteristic actor is known from films like «Platoon», «Spiderman» and «The Grand Budapest Hotel». He has twice been nominated for an Oscar.

– It's important for us to fill the quota with European actors. Therefore we were happy to learn that Dafoe is married to an european woman, Wirkola says.

Goes missing

The film «What happened to Monday?» is set in the future, in an overpopulated world where the government undertake a drastic One-Child policy. The story is about how the seven identical sisters (Noomi Rapace) circumvent these regulations.

The grandfather (Dafoe), who raises the girls, names them after the days of the week and allows each of them to go out once a week – pretending to be the same person.

This works just fine, until Monday goes missing...

Important

In the interview with Radio Alta Tommy Wirkola says Dafoe is to play the grandfather of the seven girls:

– Dafoe is casted for the person who raised the seven identical sisters. He has had a strong influence as to why the sisters are behaving like they do, and he is an important factor concerning their survival in this world, Wirkola explain.

Because of this, Dafoe will appear in several retrospective scenes.

– Noomi is incredible!

In addition to Dafoe, Wirkola says he's signed the «european shooting star» of last year, Marwan Kenzari.

– He's a very cool guy, who has just finished the remake of «Ben Hur», Wirkola says.

He's also happy to have started filming «What happened to Monday?»:

– The first six weeks it'll only be me and Noomi. It's tecnichally very challenging to film one person in seven different roles, but Noomi is doing an amazing job. She's an incredible actor, Wirkola says.
